Sharpening a Chainsaw Chain in 5 Steps

Preparatory Step: Safety First

  1. Wear safety equipment: Safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and ear plugs are essential.
  2. Ensure the chainsaw is turned off and unplugged (or that the fuel tank is empty if it’s a gas-powered model).
  3. Stabilize the chainsaw: Secure it firmly to prevent movement during sharpening.

Step 1: Cleaning the Chain

  • Clean the chain with a cloth to remove oil and sawdust residues.
  • Visually check for visible damage or worn-out links.

Step 2: Preparing the Sharpening Tool

  • Use a round file matching the chain pitch recommended by the manufacturer (Oregon offers kits for different chains).
  • Attach a filing guide or a support to maintain the correct angle.

💡 Oregon Tip: Use the PowerSharp® system for a quick sharpening method in just 3-4 seconds.

Step 3: Sharpening the Cutting Teeth

  • Hold the file at the recommended angle (usually 25° to 35° depending on the chain type).
  • File each tooth with firm strokes, always moving outward.
  • Count the same number of strokes for each tooth to ensure uniform sharpening.

Step 4: Checking the Depth Gauges

  • Inspect the depth gauges located in front of the cutting teeth.
  • Use a depth gauge tool to adjust them if necessary. Lightly file them with a flat file if they are too high.

Step 5: Lubrication and Reassembly

  • Once sharpening is complete, clean the chain again to remove metal particles.
  • Lubricate the chain with special oil (Oregon recommends the LubriTec™ system for optimal lubrication).
  • Reassemble the chain and test its proper functioning before use.

🔧 Oregon Practical Tip: If you’re unsure about the angle or chain type, check your chainsaw’s manual or use Oregon’s Infocenter online tool to find the exact chain and sharpening accessory references.
